*Make sure to read our Beer 101 post to make sure you have the proper set up before beginning to brew

INGREDIENTS

*This recipe yields one gallon of beer

  • 95 grams American Crystal Malt
  • 25 grams British Chocolate Malt
  • 10 grams British black Malt
  • 565 grams of Muntons Light DME
  • 6 oz of East Kent Golding Hop
  • 10 grams of Liberty Hops
  • 5 grams of Williamette Hops
  • Wyeast’s 1098 British Ale yeast

*Make sure to sanitize all equipment with StarSan Solution before beginning to brew

DIRECTIONS

Step 1

Take a 2 gallon pot (pot A) and fill with ½ gallon of water. Heat it until it gets to 150 degrees.

Step 2

Once at 150 degrees, pour the below grain profile into the pot and let it steep for 30 minutes:

  • 95 grams American Crystal Malt
  • 25 grams British Chocolate Malt
  • 10 grams British black Malt

Step 3

While the grain is steeping, fill another pot (pot B) with 1/2 gallon of water and heat to 150 degrees.

Step 4

Once the grain has steeped for 30 minutes, pour the grain and water from pot A through a strainer into a third 2 gallon pot (pot C).

Step 5

Once all the liquid has passed through the strainer and into pot C, take the water from pot B and run it through the grains in the strainer again and into pot C.

Step 6

Once this is complete, there total liquid should be about 1 gallon in pot C.

Step 7

Bring the liquid in pot C to a boil.

Step 8

Once it has reached a boil, take it off the heat source and add the following:

  • 565 grams of Muntons Light DME
  • 6 oz of East Kent Golding Hop

Step 9

Put it back on the heat source and bring to a boil and then let it boil for 45 minutes while stirring occasionally.

Step 10

Once the 45 minutes has passed, add 5 grams of Liberty Hops

Step 11

Once these have been added, you will want to go to your sink and fill it up with cold water and add 15 lbs (or as much that can fit) of ice. This will used later for the chilling process

Step 12

Going back to brew, let it boil for another 10 minutes and then add 5 grams of Williamette Hops.

Step 13

Let it boil for another 5 minutes and then add 5 grams of Liberty Hops

Step 14

As soon as these hops are added, take pot C off of the stove and put it in the sink with the ice / water. Check the temperature with a thermometer until it reaches 70 degrees.

Step 15

Once it has reached 70 degrees, pour liquid into a fermenter

Step 16

Once this is complete, add a pack of Wyeast’s 1098 British Ale yeast and gently shake the fermenter. This process will activate the yeast which will then start the process of making alcohol.

Step 17

Store in a dark place let it sit for 2 weeks.

That’s it! After that 2 weeks, you can then start the bottling process!
