*Make sure to read our Beer 101 post to make sure you have the proper set up before beginning to brew
INGREDIENTS
*This recipe yields one gallon of beer
- 6 lbs of Light dried Malt Extract
- ½ lb of Crushed Crystal Malt 20L
- ½ lb of Crushed Crystal Malt 40L
- 1.5 OZ of Cascade Bittering Hops
- 1 OZ of Zythos Hops
- Mesh Hop Bag
*Make sure to sanitize all equipment with StarSan Solution before beginning to brew
DIRECTIONS
Step 1
Before starting, take the crushed Crystal Malt and place in the Mesh Grain Bag.
Step 2
Once that is complete, heat 2 quarts of water to about 150 degrees into a pot (pot A).
Step 3
Place the Mesh Grain Bag into the water tying it off on a handle to ensure it doesn’t move. If the temperature drops below 150 degrees, just bring it back up to temperature. Let the bag steep for 30 minutes.
Step 4
Once the 30 minutes are up, take out the bag and rinse warm water through it allowing the water to fall back into the pot.
Step 5
Add warm water until the total volume is 2 gallons
Step 6
Add the 6lbs of Light Dried Malt Extract into the pot and stir until it is dissolved (should be about 5-10 minutes).
Step 7
Turn up the temperature until a boil is reached.
Step 8
Once it starts boiling, add the 1.5 oz of Cascade hops
Step 9
Once it has been boiling for 45 minutes, add the 1 oz of Zythos hops.
Step 10
After another 2 minutes (47 minutes since the boil started), put the pot into the sink of ice water and let it sit until it achieves about 78 degrees.
Step 11
Once the temperature is achieved, add a pack of Wyeast’s 1098 British Ale yeast and gently shake the fermenter. This process will activate the yeast which will then start the process of making alcohol.
Step 12
Store in a dark place let it sit for 2 weeks. That’s it! After that 2 weeks, you can then start the bottling process!
